Fried Wing Experiment

Have you ever wondered if air fried chicken wings are better than traditional fried chicken wings? Well, so have we, and today we’re going to put that to the test. We’re going to cook two chicken wings recipes- one way is in this air fryer and the other way is in the deep fryer.

To Season or Not To Season?

I had a question when I thought about this experiment. When do I season these wings? Traditionally, I would season the fried wings after I cooked them. However, I would season air fried or grilled wings before I cook them. So, we’re going to do it both ways. We’re going to lightly season these wings before and after cooking. Today we are using JoJo Rub to season these bad boys!

Air vs. Deep Fried Wings!

We used an Ommo Air Fryer for this chicken wings experiment. It typically takes about 30 minutes to air fry chicken wings, flipping every 10 minutes. How do I know this? Well, we just posted a simple, delicious air fried chicken wing recipe video – so I guess you could say it’s getting pretty serious around here!

For the deep fried chicken wings, we used corn oil. We recently did an oil experiment and we found that corn oil made the best wings of the three that we experimented with. Once the oil reached 375 degrees Fahrenheit, it will take about 7 minutes for the chicken wings to fry up nice & crispy. As we already know, frying is messy. But here’s the question, is it worth it?

Now, if you have seen our videos before? You know our production assistant, Jared “T-Bone” Stone participates in our blind taste tests. He’s been behind closed doors so he doesn’t know which are air fried wings and which are deep fried wings.

As far a taste, there weren’t any real differences between air fried and deep fried. Also, they both had very crispy skins.

The deep fried chicken wings had a bit more moisture to them. However, there was an obvious after taste from the wings being deep fried in corn oil. Not a bad taste. But a lingering taste.

With that being said, the air fried chicken wing wins this experiment! Although they were a little bit dryer on the inside than the deep fried wings, they had better overall flavor. Not to mentions the crispy chicken skin, the easy clean up, AND air fried chicken wings are much, much healthier. It’s air fried chicken wings all day long!

CALLING ALL CHICKEN WING EXPERTS: do I season the wings before or after cooking? What’s the right answer? I don’t know, but I’d love to hear from you in the comments below. Am I doing it right? Am I doing it wrong? How would you do it? We’d love to hear from you.
